"Let’s Get Physical!” Using Fitness-Focused Platforms for OSINT Research

A lot of OSINT and SOCMINT research and trainings like to hit on the more well-known social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram, TikTok, etc.  But there are quite a bit of lesser-known platforms out there that, while they don’t specifically focus on sharing the latest TikTok challenge or a place to share your political beliefs, hold a plethora of information that can be very beneficial to OSINT investigations.  Such tools are called “Fitness-Focused” platforms, aka “Social Media for Athletes”.  Platforms and websites such as Strava, MapMyRun, Nike+, and Garmin Connect can offer valuable information such as locations, photos, videos, associates, etc...and have even been used to discover previously unknown locations of US Military bases around the world.

Karie Nordland will introduce participants to these lesser-known resources, showing the basic navigation and searching techniques of the sites/apps, as well as show some examples of how these platforms have been used in OSINT/SOCMINT Investigations.

This webinar is geared toward all experience levels and can focus on both law-enforcement and public sector realms.
