“I Believe You Have the Wrong Suspect”: A Homicide Case Study

Live broadcast: February 20 at 7:00 PM Eastern

Plessas Academy invites you to join Karie Nordland, an experienced crime analyst from the Lakewood Police Department, for a homicide case study. On June 20, 2023, Lakewood Police Department had a homicide occur in near 6th Avenue and Simms St in Lakewood, Colorado. The suspect, driving a red, older-model Jeep Cherokee, exits off of 6th Avenue and while heading west up the exit ramp, without stopping, shoots at a transient man on the side of the road, killing him almost instantly. The suspect fled immediately from the scene, driving back eastbound on 6th Avenue, from the way he initially came from. Less than 48 hours later, due to a stroke of luck and good police work by a neighboring jurisdiction, the suspect, Randy Jiron, is arrested and in custody. However, on June 23, Lakewood PD receives an anonymous email, from someone who goes by “Us3r Zero”, stating he believes we have the wrong suspect for this homicide, and he can prove it. Having no other information other than the email address of the sender, Karie will walk participants through how using Epieos, Facebook, and Google Maps helped identify “Us3r Zero” in under an hour, and how obtaining his identify using OSINT-tools advanced the investigation.

This webinar is geared toward all experience levels and is mainly focused on a law-enforcement case study but using OSINT tools that can be used in all OSINT types of investigations.
